Jay-Z, Beyonce, Alicia Keys Among Top Nominees At BET Awards

Leading the way with BET nominations this year is, unsurprisingly, Jay-Z. The rap star exceeds all other artists with five nominations: Best Male Hip Hop artist, Best Collaboration (with Alicia Keys for "New York State of Mind"), Best Video (both for "Empire State of Mind" and "Run this Town"), and Viewer's Choice for "Empire State of Mind."

Artists with four nominations include Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Trey Songz and Melanie Fiona.

The BET Awards, now in its tenth year, will feature performances from Trey Songz, Nicki Minaj, Drake and Diddy-Dirty Money.

Queen Latifah will host the 2010 BET Awards, which air Sunday, June 27 live at 8:00 PM.

Radio 1's Alicia Keys-style north Wales song parody

US songstress Alicia Keys is apparently singing the praises of north Wales in the run-up to this weekend's Radio 1 Big Weekend festival at Faenol, Bangor.

The song, a parody of her hit with rapper Jay-Z, Empire State of Mind, is being played every day this week by Radio 1's Chris Moyles show.
Instead of waxing lyrical over Brooklyn and Harlem, 'Keys' praises the delights of Conwy and Llandudno Junction.But the show revealed: "It's a tongue-in-cheek tribute by a session singer."
The new lyrics to the song, on which the New York-born Grammy-winner in 2009 sang in praise of her hometown, were penned by Dave Vitty, better known to the programme's listeners as Comedy Dave.The song's chorus refers to the area's "picture postcard scenes", adding: "Getting here can be a trek/But you should try it what the heck/If you get the chance".
When the song was first played on the show, it was described as "beautiful" by presenter Moyles, who added that the breakfast show team had received "lots of text messages saying, "This is actually making me cry'".
"We do a lot of parodies on the programme," explained a spokeswoman for the Chris Moyles show. "And it's only fitting for us to do a special one ahead of our visit to north Wales this week.

Alicia Keys has penned a moving tribute to LENA HORNE for the pages of the new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine.

The R&B star, who was once tipped to play Horne in a biopic, admits she only recently started researching the entertainer's life and became an overnight superfan.

In her essay about the star, who died on Sunday (09May10), Alicia Keys writes, "I just got enraptured with her life and her world."

The Fallin' singer reveals she always listens to Horne's music on Sunday mornings - "Rainy Sundays in particular".

She adds, "I've never been able to ask her directly, but I've read that she was very insecure about her voice. She didn't feel that she had a beautiful voice. I feel totally differently: she had a very special and unique voice and style and quality.

"I hear a lot of sadness in her voice. I just love that melancholy tone that she has."

Alicia Keys admires what Horne was able to do as an African-American woman living when "the options and opportunities for black women were very limited."

She notes, "Lena Horne opened doors for all of us. That's a major legacy she's leaving behind."
