Alicia keys 2010, Fresh Powder Helps Dedicated Snow Fans to Ski In To May
Although most of the world’s top resorts have now ended their 2009-10 ski seasons, there are still several dozen ski areas in more than 10 countries which are offering skiing and boarding this May Day weekend. Many have special events on to celebrate as well as low prices and sunshine.
Some even have fresh snow! - www.Skiinfo.co.uk has reported that Saas Fee and Zermatt both received 5cm of new snow on their glaciers in the past 24 hours. Both are open in to May, Zermatt all year round.
Taking the rest of the world in A – Z order…
Austria has about a dozen ski centres still offering snow sports, many of them with glaciers. Ischgl ends the season this weekend with a huge pop concert at the top of its ski area by Alicia Keys, 20,000 snow and music fans are expected to attend.
Several major ski centres in Finland are still operating, including Ruka which usually keeps its main run open in to June.
In France nine resorts are open in to May, including Tignes, Val d’Isere and Chamonix as well as Europe’s highest resort, Val Thorens.
There are five ski areas open in Italy including Cervinia and Gressoney. The Presena Glacier above Passo Tonale will be open until 26th June and has a 4.2m (14 foot) base.
Japan’s Niseko has deep snow as always and will be open until May 5th, the current week being one of three major Japanese holiday weeks so it’s worth the area staying open for that.
Norway has more than 10 ski areas open including best known Hemsedal and coastal Vos, which has had a foot of new snow in the past week.
Closer to home, Cairngorm above Aviemore in Scotland still offers top to bottom skiing in what must be its most successful season for several decades. It will stay open at weekends through May.
In Spain you can still ski at Europe’s most southerly resort, Sierra Nevada, close to beach resort Malaga, this weekend. It still have more than three metres (ten feet) of snow on upper slopes.
Sweden has about 15 ski areas open including Scandinavia’s biggest, Are. Most close in the next week but Riksgransen up in the Arctic Circle is open to late June and will offer its trademark skiing under the midnight sun from late May when 24 hour daylight returns to the region.
In the US, California has had one of its best seasons for year and some resorts there will enter their eighth month of operation at the weekend after starting off early last October! Squaw Valley and Mountain High wind up their seasons this weekend, but Mammoth plans to stay open until July.
With the ash cloud now not the problem that it was many of these ski areas are easy to reach independently in this very low season. You can buy Alicia Keys Tickets and sell Alicia Keys Tickets through YourTicketMarket.com.
